Reiki Healing
A Traditional Healing Modality That Is More Than the Latest Trend
By Tralisa Colby (Oriyomi Ekundayo Osundare), The Odyssey Holistic Health
What is Reiki? Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing practice, not affiliated with any religion, re-discovered by the honorable Dr. Mikao Usui. In the West, Reiki is best described as a healing technique used to channel energy into the body means of touch, to activate its’ natural healing processes and restore physical and emotional well-being.
The word Reiki, is a fusion of the two Japanese words Rei and Ki. Rei meaning divine or higher intelligence; and Ki meaning universal life force energy. Therefore, Reiki can be defined as divine conscious life force energy.
Please note that Reiki is not the same as simple life force energy (Ki). Reiki is conscious energy guided by the Divine. It cannot be influenced, misused, or limited by the practitioner. Whereas Ki, (simple life force energy) can be influenced, and is subject to the intention, limitations, and abilities of the practitioner. This means that no matter the circumstance, a certified Reiki practitioner will always provide safe and effective healing to the areas of the body that need it most.
How Does Reiki Heal? The state of our mental and physical health is largely dependent on the flow of Ki throughout our bodies. Reiki heals us by balancing our body’s Ki levels, so energy may flow freely and smoothly.
When the flow of Ki is disrupted in the body, the cells, tissues, and organs in that corresponding area are adversely affected. The primary results of restricted Ki, are negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions are which can manifest as physical and mental illness.
During a reiki session, energy will flow from the practitioner to the client’s body. Most strongly to parts of the body where the flow of Ki has been weakened or restricted; allowing the client to experience a state of balance and harmony within themselves on a mental, physical, and emotional level.
What Can You Expect During a Typical Reiki Session?
A typical Reiki session can last anywhere from 30-90 minutes. The Odyssey Holistic Health & Wellness offers in-person and remote sessions up to 60 minutes. Time with each client can vary. Upon an initial visit a quick consult will take place between the client and the practitioner. The practitioner will discuss how a normal session is conducted and the client will have the opportunity to express his or her reasons for visiting and their session goals.
Clients should come hydrated and fully clothed (loose comfortable clothing is suggested). The client will either sit or lie down depending on which session is selected. The practitioner will then lightly touch or hover their hands over the client in a series of positions from head to toe.
Clients may feel nothing at all or the following sensations on an acute level during a session:
Tingling
Warmth
Coolness
Muscle Twitches
A Reiki session should always feel relaxing, soothing, and even energizing!
Benefits of Reiki
DISCLAIMER: REIKI IS NOT A CURE FOR DISEASE AND SHOULD NOT BE USED IN THE PLACE OF MEDICAL TREATMENT, INSTEAD AS A COMPLEMENT. Most clients receive Reiki for wellness purposes. It is a great tool for relaxation and stress reduction. While Reiki is not a cure for disease, it may assist the body in “jumpstarting” its natural healing processes via the restoration of Ki in the body.
Benefits of Reiki include but are not limited to:
General increase in wellness/mood
Mental/Emotional release/clarity
Increased awareness of self
Intense relaxation
Stress reduction
Acute pain relief
Risks of Reiki Absolutely none! Clients should drink water before and after Reiki sessions to encourage the continual flow of Ki through the body and to avoid acute discomfort such as dry mouth and lightheadedness.
